Damage types and unit size

Why a Siege Tank does not one-shot a Marine.

6 min read

Damage in StarCraft is not the number on the unit's card. The damage type and the target's size combine into a multiplier. Without knowing this, no amount of balancing will make your numbers add up.

Damage type x size multiplier
진동형 ConcussiveSmall 100% / Medium 50% / Large 25% / Independent 0%
일반형 Normal100% regardless of size. Independent only is 0%.
폭발형 ExplosiveSmall 50% / Medium 75% / Large 100% / Independent 0%

That is why a Siege Tank at 70 damage (Explosive) does not kill a 40 hp Marine in one shot: it lands 50% of 70, which is 35. Conversely a Concussive Vulture hitting an Ultralisk lands only 25%.

Order matters: armour is subtracted first, and the damage-type multiplier is applied to what is left. Doing it the other way round gives a different answer.

Shields are the exception: every damage type lands 100% on shields, whatever the size.

Two common confusions. Explosive has nothing to do with splash - they are unrelated concepts. And the space a unit takes in a transport is unrelated to its size: a Goliath is Large but takes 2, a Lurker is Medium but takes 4.

This bites immediately when you build mobs with EUD. Dummy units and critters are usually Small, so if your turret's weapon is Explosive it lands half the number on its card. If all your damage looks halved, this is almost certainly why - writing the weapon's damageType to Normal (3) fixes it.
