Testing in game

The bugs that never show up when you play alone.

2 min read

A model cannot follow you here. The only way to know what a map is actually like is to play it, and this step produces the most reliable information you will get.

  • Play with empty slots. Triggers that assume a player exists will surface.
  • Have someone leave mid-game and see how their units and counters are handled.
  • Force the extremes. Code that only breaks at zero or at max level is common.
  • Save and load repeatedly and watch for values drifting.
  • Get several people in at once if you can. Ordering bugs do not reproduce solo.

When you hand a finding back to the model, describe the conditions rather than the symptom. “Only fails at level 400 with two or more players” gets fixed far faster than “sometimes it breaks”.
